Several of the hypotheses formulated for the etiology of `MS are linked together by the proposed disturbance in porphyrin metabolism implicated in a subgroup of `MS patients: environmental inducers including viral infections, autoimmunity, and genetic susceptibility (Kotze and Rooney 1997; Rooney et al., 1999). The possible connection between these hypotheses and the heme biosynthesis pathway will be further investigated.
